Many resources are consumed in the construction and renovation of real estate. It makes sense to optimize the use of resources in construction, not only because of the increased price of building materials, but also to reduce the ecological footprint. In furniture construction and interior design, this means in concrete terms: it is better to reuse existing materials and, if that is not possible, to use sustainable materials and make them usable for as long as possible.
Studio Tegel is a .GUT Am Flughafen 1 own team consisting of 7 employed carpenters, who take over the interior finishing and furniture construction in our object. The team tries to be a good example in terms of sustainability in the renovation of the former air cargo hall. For example, existing built-in furniture from the 70s was not simply disposed of, but converted into other furniture. New furniture was designed so that it could be easily adapted and reused when the building was moved.
This requires very different design and procurement processes than in a traditional carpentry shop, as the team has to work with whatever materials are available at the time. New processes were developed here in close cooperation with GRAFT Architekten and Studio Aisslinger. After completion of the construction work at .GUT Am Flughafen 1 , the team intends to offer its services on the market as an independent joinery with a focus on circular economy.
